Hello {{First name | friend}},

Jai Hind, Desi fam! 🇮🇳

Today India turns 80. Seventy-nine years ago, at the stroke of midnight, a nation of 350 million people became free — and everything that we are, everywhere we've gone, everything we've built across the world, flows from that moment. This one's special. Let's celebrate. 🙏

Today we are covering,

Edmonton: Rain and thunderstorms still possible today — high around 17°C. Environment Canada has issued conditions favourable for severe thunderstorm development in parts of eastern Alberta. Keep the celebrations indoors if needed — chai, family, and the Red Fort ceremony on TV is a perfect Independence Day. ☕

Calgary: Beautiful sunny Saturday with a high of 21°C — perfect weather for flying your Tiranga outdoors. Enjoy it! ☀️🇮🇳

  • 🇮🇳 India's 80th Independence Day — historic in every way. For the very first time, Vande Mataram is being sung from the ramparts of the Red Fort during today's main ceremony. PM Modi's address is being translated in real time into over 22 Indian languages using Digital India Bhashini — India's AI-based translator — so every Indian, wherever they are in the world, can hear the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 in their mother tongue. Around 2,500 NCC cadets and My Bharat volunteers are forming words at the Red Fort, and military band performances are taking place at 343 locations across the country. Watch the full ceremony on DD National's YouTube channel — it's free, it's live and it's history. 🎉

  • 🌪️ Alberta tornado warning — check your alerts today. Environment Canada says conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may produce a tornado in eastern Alberta, with funnel clouds reported close to the ground. If you're in the Camrose, Wainwright or Lloydminster areas, check the Environment Canada weather app for live updates and stay safe.

I'm 63 With $1.5M. Can I Spend $10K a Month?

You’ve saved $1.5 million. Now comes the real test.

Can it produce $10,000 a month, or will that pace drain your portfolio?

Most retirees do not get a clear answer until it is too late.

The issue is not just how much you have. It is whether your portfolio was built to pay you, not just grow.

That difference can determine whether your money lasts decades or starts breaking down early.

Sequence of returns, taxes on withdrawals, healthcare costs, and whether the 4% rule still applies all play a role.

Fiduciary advisors created a breakdown showing what drives sustainable income and why the same $1.5M can produce very different outcomes.

If you have $1M or more invested, do not guess.

  • 🏫 7 new schools coming to Edmonton, Calgary and Chestermere — construction starting soon! Alberta families will benefit from seven new schools being built in Edmonton, Calgary and Chestermere. Great news for growing Desi families — more schools, more capacity, better access for our kids. 🙌

  • 🗑️ Calgary taking action on illegal dumping. The City of Calgary is cracking down on illegal dumping as garbage piles up in areas it shouldn't. If you spot illegal dumping in your neighbourhood, report it to 311.

  • 🤖 Edmonton biotech startup RNARevive eyes global commercialization. RNARevive, an Edmonton-based company, is seeking to harness the power of RNA to help people live longer and healthier lives. One of 10 exciting startups to watch at Edmonton Startup Week's Launch Party this month. 🙌

  • 🎊 Jai Hind! India is 80. Today's theme — "150 Years of Vande Mataram" and "Yuva Shakti for Viksit Bharat@2047" — pays tribute to the national song while putting India's youth front and centre. For the first time ever, all equipment on display at the Red Fort is indigenously built. From a nation that once couldn't make its own pins to a nation building 6G infrastructure, semiconductors and AI — what a journey. 🇮🇳

  • 🎗️ Raksha Bandhan is just 2 weeks away — August 28! If you have siblings in India, now is the time to order your international rakhi delivery — most services need 10-14 days. We'll have a special Rakhi edition in our August 28 issue. 🧡

  • 🏊 India heads to Asian Games 2026 in Nagoya, Japan — September 19 to October 4. Fresh off 39 medals at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, India sends 52 athletes across 7 sports. Athletics, boxing, wrestling and shooting are the strongest events to watch. Will Neeraj Chopra defend his javelin gold? 🏅

  • 🕊️ 1947 — India is free. At the stroke of midnight, Jawaharlal Nehru rose before the Constituent Assembly and spoke: "At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom." 350 million people exhaled as one. Today we mark 79 years since that breath. 🇮🇳

  • 🎂 1872 — Sri Aurobindo is born. The great Indian philosopher, poet and freedom fighter was born on this day in Calcutta. When India became independent on his 75th birthday in 1947, Sri Aurobindo said the coincidence was "not by chance." He spent his life fighting for India's freedom — political and spiritual. A true giant. 🙏

  • 📺 1982 — Colour television arrives in India! India officially launched colour television broadcasting on Independence Day 1982, ahead of the Delhi Asian Games. For millions of Indian families, seeing the Tiranga in colour on their TV screens for the first time on Independence Day was a moment they never forgot. 🎨📺
